Years ago my dear friend Suzanne told me about making a blessing book for her husband. In it she jotted down why she was grateful for him and included some fun pictures.

At the time, our kids were growing up, and I made a blessing book for my hubby. He loved it! I used a small photo album and inserted note cards with written messages, pictures, etc.

If you are looking for a fun project to do with the grandkids for Father's Day, a blessing book might be just what you are looking for. You could help them make one for their dad or for Grandpa.

What ideas do you have for honoring a favorite fellow on Father's Day?

You have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.
Surely you have granted him unending blessings
and made him glad with the joy of your presence.  
For the king trusts in the Lord; through the unfailing love
 of the Most High he will not be shaken.  (Psalm 21:6-7)

Remembering to Count our Blessings

A few years ago, when our then three-year-old granddaughter was attempting to go to sleep, she said that she was afraid. I read Psalm 4:8 to her, “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord make me dwell in safety.”

As I tucked her into bed, we talked about how God would give her peace and how He would watch over her. Then she said that she couldn’t sleep (yep … she could have been stalling for more time). So we started counting blessings. I left the room as she was remembering all of the ways that God has blessed her.

Recently, this same granddaughter (who is now seven years old) said that she was able to spend the night at a friend's house because she was not afraid. She said that I had taught her to count her blessings. It's amazing how God uses the little things that we do with our grandchildren!

Once I started a blessing book with the grands. We'd jot down in in people and things that they were grateful for. I confess, I haven't been very good at keeping it up. My granddaughter's recent reminder of counting our blessings makes me think that it's time to get once again get the little book out ... and keep it out.

If you haven't started a blessing book with your grandchild, you might want to do this. I'd love to hear your ideas about remembering our blessings.

When our three-year-old granddaughter was attempting to go to sleep during a visit, she said that she was afraid. I remembered her words as I read Psalm 4:8 yesterday morning: “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD make me dwell in safety.”

When she came over for her weekly visit last night, I shared this verse with her. We did our best to memorize it together, and I could tell that the words gave her a sense of comfort. As I tucked her into bed, we talked about how God would give her peace and how He would watch over her.

Then she said that she couldn’t sleep (yep … she could have been stalling for more time). We started counting blessings. I left the room as she was remembering all of the ways that God has blessed her.

You know, I think I’m going to start a little blessing book with the grands with pictures of people and things they're grateful for. And I think it would be good to include some Scriptures—ones like Psalm 4:8 that remind them of God’s unending care.

Were your children or grandchildren ever afraid to go to sleep at night? How did you comfort them? Also, do you have any ideas about making a blessing book for older children?

Some of our grandkids presented me with a precious certificate on Mother's Day. One of our granddaughters said that I had helped her count her blessings. Actually, I had to think about that for a minute. When did I do that?

Then I remembered some times when our grandkids haven't been able to sleep at night. We'd count blessings until they drifted into slumberland. I guess that was etched on their hearts more than I realized.

Once I made Pops a "blessing book," with pictures and notes about why I am blessed to have him for my hubby. (Thanks, Suzanne, for this idea!) We could make a  "blessing book" for our grandkids. It could be a special gift on a 13th or 18th birthday.

I want to be more proactive in thanking God for the blessings that He showers on our family. Psalm 51:12 says, "For surely, O Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield."

How have you helped your grandchildren count their blessings? Do you have any suggestions about how our lives could be marked with grateful hearts?
