Capturing our stories

Tuesday's Grand Connection Thought
by Mary May Larmoyeux

Not too long ago, a good friend, Karen Jordan, and I taught a four-week writing workshop at church called "Capture Your Story." One week we talked about preserving our family stories for future generations, especially our spiritual stories.

We jotted down stories that we wanted to share with our families. Some memories that came to my mind included the premature birth of our oldest son. The doctor said that he would not live through the night, but God knew better. This son is now the father of three of our precious grandchildren.

And I remembered getting out of a taxi as a college student when I was visiting a small church. A middle-age couple "adopted" me and brought me to church every Sunday after that. Pops and I still stay in touch with them today.

What stories to you want your great, great-grandchildren to know about you? What do you want them to know about your faith? If you haven't already begun capturing family stories (in writing, on videotape, through a recording, etc.), you may want to consider starting today.

Doing this can be very simple. You may want to purchase a special journal and just jot down your stories ... His stories ... on a weekly or monthly basis. Someday, a generation you will never know will thank you!

Garage sales and life

Garage-sailing, anyone?

As we pause to remember the events of September 11, 2001, may we consider the value of life itself.

Several years ago, one of my good friends, Karen Jordan shared a very though-provoking article that someone in her family wrote. I wanted to pass the article on to you. It sure made me think about what really matters in this world. After all, we grandparents have only so many years to invest in our legacy.

Enjoy the article!  You'll be glad that you read it.

Sailing

“Garage-sailing” became the best venue to interact with my grown daughter early on Saturday mornings this summer. The only way to get to know her, as an adult, seems to require a loss of sleep on my part. Her menagerie of young children, pets, and strong-willed husband leaves little time for me to ever talk privately with her.

After four or five hours of visiting garage and yard sales ... read more.

Have a great week,
Mary

The Gift of Christmas

Subscribe to Grand Connection by Email

Friday's Grand Connection Fun

My friend Karen Jordan shared some of her family's wonderful Christmas traditions in her blog BLESSED. She asked, "When your children ask you, 'What does (Christmas) mean to you?’' What do you tell them? Or rather, how do you 'show' them?"

On Christmas Day, Pops and I are reminded of how Almighty God showed His incomprehensible love. He sent His Son to meet our greatest need.

"If our greatest need had been information," Max Lucado says, "God would have sent an educator. If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist. If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist. But since our greatest need was forgiveness, God sent us a Savior."

As we give gifts to loved ones this Christmas, may we remember the greatest Gift of all!

You may want to watch the video below with your grandchildren and talk about what it would be like if Jesus were born in today's age. (I think that you'll enjoy it too!)

Merry Christmas,
Mary

The Disappointment of Miscarriage

Tuesday’s Thought

Last week a friend shared with me the sad news that her daughter-in-law had a second miscarriage. Her heart not only ached for her son and his wife, but also for the grandchild she had hoped to hold one day.

How do you pray for a couple who is intensely focused on having a baby, but continue to face disappointment?

That’s the very question that Karen Jordan asked herself after her son and his wife had five miscarriages in six years. Karen went to Scripture and camped out in Philippians 4:19, “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” And Matthew 6:8, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

“I was surprised to learn of a sixth conception immediately after being prompted to pray,” she says. “And the next waiting period ensued. We tossed hope around our discussions as we tried to ignore our fear of another loss.”

Karen shares in her article Zechariah’s Promise about the answer to her prayers: the birth of a grandson, Zach. “His entry into our troubled world may have been overlooked by many,” she writes. “But those who attended this birth event and had watched God work for the previous nine months recognized God’s miraculous hand on his parents. Zach’s squinted eyes peeked to see a dozen people with smiles and tears who had fervently prayed for him over the past months and years. Then, he drifted off once again to his land of dreams.”

I never grow tired of hearing how God answers prayers … in His time and in His way—a way that is part of His sovereign purpose.
