Kids really do say the “darndest things!”

Tuesday’s Thought

A friend e-mailed me the following story. I couldn’t help but laugh after I read it:

One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church, staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it. The six-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, "Good morning Alex.”

"Good morning Pastor,” he replied, still focused on the plaque. “Pastor, what is this?”

The pastor said, “Well son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.”

Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque. Finally, little Alex's voice (barely audible and trembling with fear) asked, “Which service, the 8:30 or the 10:30?”

Art Linkletter was right, kids do say the "darndest things"!

Reading this little story reminded me of something one of our granddaughters once said. She had visited a nursing home and was telling me about the people with the broken bottoms. I had no idea what she was talking about until her mother explained. Our sweet little grand thought that people were in wheelchairs because their “bottoms broke.”

And then there was the time … decades ago … when one of my very own sons asked why I called him, “Son.”

"Because you’re my little boy,” I answered.

Not liking the idea that he was a little boy he said, “Well, just call me Moon.”

Ahhhh … to be a child again.

Please share funny things that your kids or grandkids have said by either leaving a comment below or sending an e-mail to mary@marymaywrites.com.

Hope we’re all smiling this week!

Mary, we had a cute experience with our granddaughter. We went out as a family to celebrate my husband's birthday, and I was holding our granddaughter in my lap for quite a while. He thought I might need a break, so he said "Do you want me to take her?"

I asked our granddaughter, "Do you want to go to Grandpa?" She looked at me, shook her head and in the sweetest little voice said "No" and as far as she was concerned that settled it.
