Grandmothers are Antique Little Girls

Tuesday's Grand Connection Thought
by Mary May Larmoyeux

Not too long ago, I was reading some wonderful quotes about grandparents. Here are a few of my favorites:

Grandmothers are just antique little girls. (Author Unknown)

Perfect love sometimes does not come until the first grandchild. (Welsh Proverb)

Grandparenting is a wonderful time of life. Finally we can have the ice cream without first eating the vegetables. (Lois Wyse)

Did you get a smile on your face as your read these quotes. I sure did.

Before our first grand was born, my friends warned me that there were no words to express the thrill of being a grandparent. Now I understand that it’s impossible to really describe the joy this antique little girl has when she plays tea party with her three-year old granddaughter.

Before I had grands I thought I knew how to love. Now I know that all of the mistakes that I made as a parent had a purpose—to mold me into a grandparent who can love more perfectly.

Before I had grands I believed children should eat their vegetables before dessert. But now I know that the grands can eat their ice cream at Grandma's house before the veggies. After all, it’s up to their parents to see that they eat right. (smile)

What has grandparenting taught you?

I love what Catherine Moran said in her poem Four Dimensional Love, "Somehow I feel the love for my grandchildren flows through them back to my own children once more."

Have a great week,
Mary

Mary, My Grands have taught me many things. For one thing, for boys-always have something ready to eat. For Girls-take time to listen.

I think it is important, to let your Grands know that you daily pray for them, sometimes I forget but I think it is important to ask them what it is you can pray for them. Elaine

Thanks for sharing, Elaine. Your suggestion to ask the grands how we can pray for them (even when they are small) is a great one.

Grandparenting has taught me (once again) that little ears are always listening, and little eyes are always watching. We pass down our legacy of values and beliefs to the next generation, whether we intend to or not.

Grandparenting has taught me to TRUST God to guide my children as parents. I've learned to TRUST Him to be their Holy Spirit when I'm tempted to take on that job myself, trying to tell them how "I used to do it." I've learned to simply enJOY the GRANDS each moment I can, because time slips by so quickly. I never had the benefit of grandparents growing up, nor did my children, so I don't really know what grandparents are supposed to do, but I'm learning. I'm just trying to be what I'd like to have if I were a grandchild.

When I raised my children I was "Mom." When the good Lord gave me grandchildren (with the help of story books and cookie smells) I became "Grandma Magic Darling."

"Grandchildren give us a second chance to do things better because they bring out the best in us" (Author unknown).

I'm all about those second chances, aren't you?

Karen, I love what you said about our grandkids giving us second chances. So true!

As I write, our fourth great-grandchild is to arrive in the morning. Our thirteen grandchildren are awaiting his arrival and we grandparents are thrilled to greet another gift of joy. I believe grandchildren are promises of second love. Hopes are fulfilled and love is deepened when our hearts are captured with that first cherished smile. Blessings, Rita
