Tuesday's Grand Connection Thought
Not too long ago, our small-group from church started talking about special names. A good friend of ours, Jim, said that the name BaBa is very special to him. He explains: “It carries with it the honor of being the only BaBa to a little girl that loves, trusts, and respects me. She thinks I can do anything!”
His wife, LaRue, said: “One name that is special to me is MeMe. It’s special because a very special little girl calls me by that name—my granddaughter! And before that her mother called my mother by that name. So it has become a link from the present to the past and to the future. My hope is that it remains as special to me and my granddaughter as it did to my daughter and her grandmother, MeMe.”
Aren’t the many names of grandparents wonderful!
I’m Nana and love that name. Why? Because my grandmother was Nana and I have many, many fond memories of her. I wish I could talk with her now.

ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are delighted to be called G-Pa (gee pa)and G-Ma (gee ma)! The grandtots have extra grandmothers and grandfathers, and all the "usual" names were taken by others, so we went this route and everyone is happy!

ReplyDeleteMary, our granddaughter called me Grandma Magic Darling because I massaged her feet. I massage all the children, grandchildren, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, whoever likes a good foot rub. She named Grandpa Wonderful and added Barbarian. He makes great bran muffins for the famiy (Grandpa Wonderful) and he teases the little ones and tries to lick their noses. I'm Nonni and my husband is Papa. I named us for a very good reason. My parents left it up the the children to name the grands, and my first cousin dubbed my maternal grandmother "Big Momma" (and she was pretty chubby) and being the only child on my paternal side, I named my grandmother "Mammie."
ReplyDeleteI wasn't going to risk it. So minutes after my first grandchild was born I held him, looked deep in his eyes, and said, "Hi Ethan, I'm your Nonni!"
Hi, Linda! I love how you named yourself Nonnie as soon as Ethan was born. That's a wonderful "grandmother name" !

ReplyDeleteI think all names from our grandchildren are affectionate titles. Two of our names are "Grandma Magic Darling” and “Grandpa Wonderful Barbarian.” We love it.
